Suffolk Overview - Situated to the north-east of Greater london, the rural county of Suffolk is within the area of England called East Anglia. Suffolk incorporates an area of 1,466 sq miles and a population of around 0.73 million. The county touches the counties of Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex, the capital town is Ipswich, whilst additional important towns are Lowestoft, Newmarket, Felixstowe, Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds. Suffolk is mostly flat and low-lying, there are wetland areas in the north of the county that are within The Broads National Park. From 1889-1974 the county was divided into two administrative counties, West Suffolk and East Suffolk.
