Suffolk Overview - Located to the north-east of Greater london, the county of Suffolk is part of the area of England called East Anglia. Suffolk has an area of 1,466 sq miles and has a population of about 730,000. The county borders the neighbouring counties of Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire, Ipswich is the capital town, and other significant towns are Lowestoft, Stowmarket, Felixstowe, Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds. The county is typically low-lying and flat, there are wetland areas in the north of the county which are part of The Broads. During the period 1889-1974 Suffolk was separated into two administrative counties, West Suffolk and East Suffolk.
