Suffolk Overview - Positioned to the north-east of Greater london, the rural county of Suffolk is within the region of England known as East Anglia. Suffolk has an area of 1,466 square miles plus a population of around 0.73 million. Suffolk is bordered by the neighbouring counties of Essex, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, Ipswich is the county town, while other significant towns include Bury Saint Edmunds, Felixstowe, Stowmarket, Newmarket and Lowestoft. The county is mostly low-lying and flat, in the northern part of the county you will find wetland areas that are within The Broads. From 1889-1974 the county of Suffolk was separated into two administrative counties, East Suffolk and West Suffolk.
